About

Built by operators for operators.

thedata.broker is a seller-side brokerage for the operating records of companies in any industry, from software and insurance to freight and the trades. We work for the company that owns the record, not for the buyer.

We started in the trades and property. The method carries over.

thedata.broker is run by people who come from roofing, solar, construction and real estate. In those businesses we know what a job file really holds: the inspection, the fight over scope, the supplement, the approval, and the phone call that set the whole thing in motion.

That's the part of an operating record that's hard to find anywhere else, and it's easy to miss if you've never run a crew, a project or a closing. It's also where your customers' and employees' details live, which is why we spend as much time on what comes out as on what goes in.

Buyers want the same kind of record from every industry: the ticket and the fix, the draft and the redline, the exception and who approved it. We don't claim to know software, law, accounting or insurance from the inside. What carries over is the method: find the records that tie decisions to outcomes, work out what has to come out before anything moves, and make buyers compete. Where professional rules apply, as they do for lawyers and accountants, we ask the questions and your counsel gives the answers.

AI companies have started paying for records like these. When an owner hears about it, it's often as one offer from one buyer, on that buyer's terms. We built thedata.broker so the company that owns the record can see several offers side by side, and set its own limits before anyone bids.

What we believe and how it shows up.

  1. 01

    Sellers should see competing offers.

One buyer's quote tells you what that buyer will pay. Several qualified buyers bidding on the same license, compared side by side, tell you where you stand.

  2. 02

    Privacy is the default.

The people in your records are customers, clients and employees, not data points. Identifiers come out before delivery, sensitive categories stay out by default, and nothing moves until you approve it.

    How we handle data

  3. 03

    Plain terms.

A license should make sense to the person who signs it. We explain structure, exclusivity and exclusions in ordinary language, and we tell you what we don't know.

  4. 04

    We earn when you do.

Our fee comes out of a deal that closes, so we're pointed at the same result you are: a good license, signed. Nothing is charged up front.

How we're paid and who else might pay us.

Small commission on close. Nothing up front.

We are paid a small commission out of a deal that closes. If nothing closes, you owe nothing. The commission is written into the engagement agreement you sign with us.

Some buyers may also pay us

When a buyer does, we flag that buyer on the offer, so you can weigh it as you compare. The full wording is on our disclosures page.

Start with a short intake. Or just say hello.
